The monastery rises on the Mount Calvario, where, the tradition places the ancient cathedral of Perugia and a etruscan-roman graveyard area. Thanks for the actions of a young perugino noble, Pietro Vincioli, was born a grand basilica and the attached monastery that the Benedettini chose like seat. An tree-lined avenue leads at the basilica at whuch is possible enter in it through a door appeared on a wide cloister composed from 16 columns in travertin. The facade of the basilica (now hidden from the cloister), can be admired in a fresco of Benedetto Bonfigli reserved in the National Gallery of the Umbria. The Abbey is also seat of the Department of Agriculture and of the seismic observatory "Andrea Bina".
