Begun in 1651 by Richini where a time there was a 'Umiliati' cloister the imposing building was ended in 1773: Piermarini added to it in 1780 a colossal portal. At the centre of the court is placed the bronze of Napoleon I of 1809 on model of Antonio Canova. Today the palace is seat of Brera Picture-gallery (open in 1803), of the Accademia di Belle Arti, Braidense Library and office of the Osservatorio Astronomico e Metereologico.
