The Cup of Sapphire is the most ancient relic of the Treasure of the Cathedral of Monza. It is a chalice on pedestal of gold (of 1490), a time perhaps endowed of two rings to be able take it with both the hands (tradition wants that the chalice was offered from Teodolinda at the spouse Agilulfo after that she drunk from it). A lot of french archeoligists are of the opinion that the chalice is not a gem, as in the XII century the blue glass was called saphir. The Cup of Sapphire was used in the solemn toast for the coronations of Napoleon I and Ferdinando of Austria. |
