With its massive structure a stellar plan represents one of the the most interresting european examples of eighteenth-century military architecture. It was wanted by Vittorio Amedeo III and built on project of Ignazio Bertola after the demolition of the ancient district of Bergoglio.
The works began in 1728 abd continued in the second half of the century. In 1821, the Citadel was one of the cardinal points of the liberal insurrection.
