Under the command of two citizens of Alessandria, Iacopo dal Verme and Andreino Trotti, the armies of the Visconti defeated the French troops led by the earl of Armagnac on July 25 1391, in a bloody battle fought under the walls of Alessandria. Being Saint Jame's day, the victory was celebrated with the building of a church dedicated to the saint and known as "Saint Jame's of the Victory".
