The town of Benevento is situated in a flat area, to the convergence of the river Sàbato with the Calore, where converge more roads of connection between the entroterra and the plain bell. The arechological finding in Cellarulo district are recent, near to the convergence of the two rivers, that document the ancient Samnite origins of the then Malaventrum. The town a time was protected from a city wall still existing and visible to strokes with an of its door of entrance to the town: Port'Arsa that introduces directly in the Rione Triggio. Between the monuments we remember the church of Santa Sofia, founded from Arechi II like sanctuary of the Principe and official temple of the dukedom beneventano. The building is between the most interesting depositions of longobarda architecture arrived until us. To visit are the Teatro Romano of 200 A.C., the Arco of Traiano of 114 and the Rocca of the Rettori (Castle) of XIV century. As for the cooking of this zone we can say that is mainly of land; a speciality absolutely original is the ham of mountain, the sausage of lung, the caciottine, the ricotta and the caciotta. Some beneventana speciality is found also in the area confectionery in which dominates the torrone that can be white traditional with almonds, rather than nuts, soft with chocolate and nuts. |
