Campobasso is situated between the hill of the Niferno and of the Fortore. The ancient part, with the tight and tortuous roads, often to steps, is arranged to semicircle on the slope of the hill said Monte, ruling from the Castello Monforte. The heart of the town is Piazza Prefettura with the neoclassical Cattedrale. In the historical center of Campobasso are preserved the greater monuments of the town that the Chiesa of Sant'Antonio Abate, the most representative of the art Barocca of Campobasso, the Chiesa of San Leonardo of XIII century and the Chiesa of Santa Maria of the Croce. To little kilometers from Campobasso we find the Santuario of Ercole, in locality Civitelle, dedicated to the hero of the mitology, while in locality San Pietro is visitable the temple of Sepino. The gastronomy of the territory is based on typical and genuine products like the squashes, the caciocavallo, the sausages. Features of the territory are the famous soups realized according to the traditional prescriptions thanks to the large variety of legumes cultivated in this zone like lentils, broad beans, grams, beans, cicerchie and spelt. The dish that however characterizes the territory of Campobasso is the "Caponata", a typical dish, prepared with a big biscuit of grain said "Tarallo", wet in water and vinegar, and sprinkled of tomato, celery, peppers, anchovies, black olives and hard-boiled eggs. |
