Designed by Edoardo Arboreo Mella, the cathedral was built between 1875 and 1879 over a preexisting church that formed part of the Dominican cloister of Saint Mark, and replaced the former cathedral destroyed during the French domination. Laid out in the form of a Latin cross, this neo-classical cathedral is also an important historical and artistic collection, thanks to its furnishings and works of art.
