The production of handmade paper is one of the milestones in the history of the Mediterranean and reminds of the glory of Amalfi.
Between legend and reality the art of hand made paper has been revaluated during the last decennia.
In the town of Amalfi, at the beginning of the Valle delle Ferriere, still exists a most interesting paper mill once owned by local papermaker Nicola Milano. He came from one of the most famous and oldest families who have made for generations paper in the Amalficoast.
Master papermaker Milano founded in the year 1969 the Amalfi Paper Mill Museum, “Museo della Carta”.
The Museum is housed in an old paper mill that dates back to the XIV and perhaps even the middle of the XIII century.
Thanks to a number of interventions which have taken place in order to refurbish and conserve, this Paper Mill Museum offers its visitors the possibility to admire unique antic equipment and machinery used to produce hand made paper.
Among the equipment there are the old wooden mallets, operated by an hydraulic wheel which was used to beat and mash rags of cotton, linen and hemp, previously gathered in stone beaters; the Hollander which had been installed on November 18th, 1745; the press of the of the eighteenth century used to eliminate the water residue out of the sheets of hand made paper; the drum machine for “the hand and machine work”.
All the antic machines for the production of hand made paper (wooden mallets, the Hollander and the drum machine) have been refurbished recently and are again operative. During a visit at the Museum one of the machines will be operating using the water management system to distribute the force of the water from the Canneto river.
In the Paper Mill Museum there is also an exhibition room in an added modern structure and an interesting library specialised in documents on the history and techniques of the papermaking industry.
The Paper Mill Museum offers its visitors the occasion to go back in time during a 15 to 20 minutes guiding tour which starts continuously in Italian, English, German or French to experience the antic way of paper making.
Opening hours: daily from 10.00 till 18.30 hours.
