It was planed by Giovan Battista Filippo Basile in the 1864. The works were finished in the 1897 fromthe son of the planner, Ernesto Basile. At the sides of the monumental stairs of access there are two bronze statues, two lions with two allegoric female figures. May 16 1897, the Massimo, second theatre of Europe after the Opera of Paris, begins its activity of opera theatre with the Falstaff of Verdi and continued it until 1974, when at cause of the new rules of safety, the Theatre was closed. It was reopen ib the 1997 after a closing of 20 years.
