Its most striking architectural feature is the Rocca which belonged to the Manfredi family, who were the lords of Faenza, and later to Caesar Borgia, the Venetians and the Pope. Its stands on an area which is said to have been inhabited in ancient times. Legend has it that the church of San Giovanni in Ottavo was built at the behest of Galla Placidia - daughter of Theodosius, the last Roman Emperor, and sister, wife and mother of emperors - on a temple to Jupiter Ammon.
