The Abbey was erected on the mount Subasio in the 1025 from the abbot Romualdo for the camaldolesi monks. In its cycle of life, were a lot the peolple that stayed in it, between everything Francesco d'Assisi. Of this ancientest abbey, destroyed in the 1535 from Paolo III, now there are only the tower and the church, always open. The project for the hermitage was entrusted at the milanese architects Melchiorre and Vittorio Bega and was inaugurated in the 1972.
